Friends of Handforth Station continued their celebrations of their 20th anniversary with the launch of a lectern plaque produced by them for the villagers of Handforth.

The plaque records their history, that of the station and its goods traffic.

Tony Edwards, a local railway historian unveiled the plaque at the station, which features him as a young trainspotter on the old station platform in a photo from the early 1950's. Tony contributed the short history of the station whilst Paul Teather wrote the short story of the goods traffic from coal to World War 11 tanks. Posters on display at the station provide further details about its history.

Tony said "I am proud to be here today to perform this ceremony at a station which featured so much in my life as a child trainspotter."

Mike Bishop, founder of the group in 1996 added "The contribution by more people in the local community is most welcome and it is hoped that this historic plaque along with the matching POW one will be extended to give the full story of Handforth's rich history. Other notable locations could include Handforth Hall, the chapel previously on the British Legion site, the old National school, the chapel at the Pinewood Hotel and a number of others."

Posters on display at Handforth Station provide further details about its history.

Photo by Malcolm Spence shows Tony and family with friends of the station and Councillor Barry Burkhill representing Cheshire East Council Community Fund, which part funded the plaque.
