Youngsters scoops top awards for Tatton Show garden

For the second year running Wilmslow High School and Cheshire East Youth Support Service have designed and installed a School Garden at the RHS Tatton Flower Show.

This year the garden was a magic carpet of colour themed around the story of Aladdin and has been awarded both a distinction and 'Best High School Garden'.

The garden features a mosaic and a snake, which young people from Handforth Youth Centre made themselves. The left side of the garden, which is made from marigolds, is designed to resemble a desert. This area also features cacti, and a 'magic carpet' which Wilmslow High School made. It was raised with bricks and two acrylic cylinders. The right hand side of the garden, which is made of lobelia, is designed to depict an oasis in the desert.

Joe McBride explained "The reason we chose Aladdin was because we felt it was the one we could really excel with. Following last year's garden, we knew a lot more this year and so we feel we have done even better. This is reflected in us being awarded distinction. We are all utterly thrilled about the result, especially considering all of the effort everyone has put in and possibly a few sleepless nights!"

The garden also features several herbs and edible plants, as the rules of the competition stipulate that entrants have to include a certain percentage of these plants within the garden.

In total 30 to 40 young people have been involved in the project, from several youth clubs around Wilmslow and Handforth, and certain elements of the garden were made by students at Wilmslow High School.

After the show, as they did last year, the garden with be moved to a place in the community so that everyone can enjoy it. At the moment we believe this will be the Oakenclough Children's Centre on Colshaw Farm.

Joe added "We are very grateful for the financial support we have received from local Town Councils."

The RHS Flower Show continues at Tatton Park until Sunday 24th July.
