The Dogfather: Are you a screamer?

Image 1 (1)

I went to a job recently where a family were distraught at their dog's over excited unruly behaviour.

Whilst I was listening to what dad had to say mum came home from work screaming "Has my big boy missed his mummy?" and started to ruffle the dog's ears. Unsurprisingly Fido jumped all over her.
It took 10 minutes for me to calm him at which time their daughter ran in from the kitchen rattling a bag of crisps screeching: 'Get down, get down,' at a pitch capable of breaking glass as the dog launched itself into the stratosphere.

Then dad got annoyed and began shouting at the dog and the whole scene turned into a circus. (I was half expecting a clown to turn up in a backfiring car with doors flying off in all directions.)

Clearly this was NOT a dog problem but a family problem.
There is no way they will ever have a calm balanced dog with all the fussing, yelling and screaming.
All the training classes in the world won't change this UNLESS the dog stays at home and sends the family away.

If you want a calm dog YOU must be calm, losing your temper with an excited boisterous dog is an exercise in futility. When a dog becomes unbalanced it can only regain composure by following the lead of a balanced source. Once you lose self-control you simply add to the chaos. You cannot calm an agitated dog by becoming agitated yourself.

Instead of one angry individual you end up with two. You would achieve a far better result simply by keeping quiet (If in doubt... shut up.)

Our new Puppy Foundation Class starts this week why not come along and learn how to calm both yourself and your dog?

Surprise surprise. But not unusual. Why do dog owners (not all before you canine lovers erupt in fury) seem to have so little idea of what dog owning entails? Dogs are not toys or best pals.

Probably would have been better to type "why do SOME dog owners..." instead of a back-handed caveat that still sounds a bit arsey.

Some parents seem to have little idea of what bringing up a child entails, it's all part of being a 'trial and error' species.

Yup. Some dog owners. A baby is unlikely to turn into an animal with the ability to inflict serious injury within a few months.

No but a child can... Strange how a non-dog owner is casting such opinions on a dog based article, clearly misinformed and you know what they say about people who don't like dogs...

To be fair it's easy to see why some non dog owners don't like dogs.
If your child gets knocked over by a boisterous dog or a neighbour's dog barks continuously or the pavement in your neighbourhood is covered in dog poo you are unlikely to look upon dogs with affection.
Once owners come to class and start to see just how better behaved their dog's can be with good training and a constructive exercise regime relationships between them and their neighbours improves immeasurably.
It's all about education.

Enlighten me Christian - what do they say. Whether I "like" dogs is not the question and how that influences my right to comment is worrying indeed. "Clearly misinformed......." about what exactly?

If you don't like something for whatever personal reason then your comments about that same thing are heavily biased and thus mis-informed.

I'm not challenging your right to comment. I'm challenging your original statement:

"Surprise surprise. But not unusual. Why do dog owners (not all before you canine lovers erupt in fury) seem to have so little idea of what dog owning entails? Dogs are not toys or best pals."

Dogs ARE best pals hence "mans best friend".

"not all before you canine lovers erupt in fury" says a lot about your attitude towards dogs and their owners in general.

You can use Google to see what the general opinion of people who don't like dogs is.

I've met/known a lot of people who don't like dogs and they are all the same on a personality level, and your comments on here go hand-in-hand with that.
