Main works to commence on new waste hub

Cheshire East Council has entered into a contract for the main construction stage of a new environmental waste hub.

The new hub will be located on Cledford Lane in Middlewich and serve the whole Borough, replacing the existing facility at Pyms Lane in Crewe and the proposed one at Lyme Green - the scheme which the Council was forced to abort because the main contractor had started work on the site before planning permission was obtained and officers did not comply with EU Procurement Regulations.

The Council purchased the site for £2.41m, from which Ansa will run waste collection, recycling, parks and street cleansing services for Cheshire East Council.

The authority says the move to a single recycling centre will enable them to speed up implementation of its strategy to cut landfill to a minimum and increase recycling, which will bring multiple environmental and economic benefits for everyone in Cheshire East.

The Council is also investing £1m into constructing a state-of-the-art air treatment system to minimise the impact of odour from the site.

Councillor Don Stockton, Cheshire East Council Cabinet member for regeneration, said: "I am delighted for the residents of Cheshire East that construction can begin in the next few weeks.

"This project will put our residents first by maximising recycling efforts and reducing landfill to an absolute minimum.

"Residents local to the site will benefit from the fact that Cheshire East Council has chosen a construction partner that understands the vital role that local community involvement can have."

The contract with Wates will see the construction and refurbishment of new and existing buildings as part of scheduled works for the development on Cledford Lane. The 10 month project begins on May 23rd.
