New development applies for alcohol and music licence

An application for a licence to play live music and supply alcohol at a new-build office development has been submitted to Cheshire East Council.

The Colony on Altrincham Road, which is currently under construction, is seeking a licence to enable live music to be played from 7pm to 11pm on Thursdays and Fridays and from 3pm to 11pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

Additionally they are applying to play recorded music from 7am to 11pm Monday to Sunday and supply alcohol from 12noon to 11pm Monday to Sunday.

In February they submitted a planning application to change the use of a new-build office development to retail to enable a kitchen showroom and associated offices to open at The Colony, increasing the internal floorspace from 336 square metres to 416 sqm. A decision on this application, reference 16/0693M, is expected shortly.

The site was previously occupied by Brybour Lodge Kennels but permission was granted at the end of 2013 to redevelop the site from kennels to office accommodation.

The existing house has been renovated and extended, whilst the kennels have been demolished and replaced with office buildings.

Well that's a complete surprise….!
The Colony!! Anyone with local considerations at heart should watch what our planners (looking after our environment and best interests) do with this brazen developer who has already shown intent to bend the usage away from accommodation/animal care on an agricultural site to offices (we really need more of those don't we) AND then added retail with enlargement of the non-accomodation area - now they want to add a licence for alcohol and live/recorded music 7 days a week. New way to sell kitchens, perhaps not.
Far fetched idea in the first place or shall we call a spade a spade - speculative. It's a clear, overt attempt to subvent their original offices application. They've already completed much of the buildings against which they obtained permissions so let them get on with it and maybe sell kitchens - but no music, no alcohol and no more lengthening the piece of string.

As a regular commuter between Manchester, Alderley Edge and Liverpool, I have watched with anticipation the development grow. I had originally assumed the buildings were residential due to there sympathetic design to the surrounding countryside. Therefore, pleasantly surprised that not only do they offer small office spaces with beautiful views but also a Business Members Club, which will allow me to entertain clients without the distraction of a bar/restaurant atmosphere.

Having used similar facilities within the London area, I can only imagine that the networking events which promise to be held regularly will only compliment my business and grow my network of contacts.

Personally I don't see a negative to this futuristic approach to business and I am looking forward to the opening and the occasional G&T on the terrace.

My big concern is where this is sited. Offices opposite Waters was no problem, but does a science company really want what is in essence a club opposite them, particularly when their staff work very long hours? I thought that Waters was supposed to be part of the progressive development for Wilmslow. Fair enough there is the hotel - but that is further on. The fact that it is called, "The Colony" suggests that alternative uses were envisaged from day 1. The best thing for this site would be for the offices to become a Science Conference Venue and accommodation for visiting academics in the ownership of Waters.

Why does a kitchen showroom/offices require a permanent drinks Licence and 24/7 permit to play recorded music?
Is The Colony anticipating being a Social Club for nearby developments eg Waters?

Interesting comment from Victoria includes 'within the London area'.
Fine IF public transport is available, but drinking on the job? Look at Whitbread results recently. It's Costa Coffee fuelling growth and profits, not alcohol.
With so much office space unoccupied in Wilmslow and Handforth, this site adds to the problem, unrecognised by planners and speculators. Work processes have change irrevocably.
However a Northern Corridor/Airport opportunity may happen, but why would it? It feels lonely out there, sort of between a rock and a hard place.
(PS Donald Trump that well known billionaire is Tee Total, as are so many, successful in business and sport).

Victoria - since when did kitchen showrooms have "Business Membership" clubs and what are these "networking events which promise to be held regularly"? Is there something we are not being told about this request for a licence to sell alcohol? Also a licence for "live music"? Never bought a kitchen when there has been a singer performing at the same venue. As to comparisons with London - yes - there are live venues all over it but I have never been to one there that has doubled as a kitchen showroom. There is, of course, the Colony Club in London which is a club/casino, which also has private function rooms.

Wow. The Wilmslow Whingers are alive with this one. A mixed use commercial space dares to suggest they may want to play background music, or allow their members to enjoy a glass of wine. Immediately the weary-willies of Wilmslow jump up in arms and automatically assume this is going to be a den of iniquity filled with drunkards and social deviants.

This is not a night club. It's a high-class and desirable office complex (with a downstairs space apparently being used as a high-end kitchen showroom). The idea to become a Private Members club is inspired and offers something to business customers largely unavailable outside London.

...but does Wilmslow rejoice at the attraction of innovation? Swell with pride that Wilmslow has a chance to secure a further USP to the business community....no, they sit, whinge and rage war behind their keyboards at the thought of someone drinking a glass of wine over a meeting, or enjoying a G&T at the end of the day with colleagues/customers.

These same Wilmslow Whingers will be the first to complain when business leave the area, or Wilmslow gets bettered by nearby developments (Airport City anyone?). Time to move into the 20th Century en route to the 21st Century that the rest of us dwell within.

Thank God such whingers weren't around in 1896 or we'd still be requiring a man with a Red Flag to walk in front of all cars.
