Robin Hood Olympics hit the target

The Robin Hood Olympics certainly hit the target on Sunday, 24th April, as scores of children flocked to Wilmslow Parish Hall.

Organised by Wilmslow High School's Get Set for Community Action Group and Wilmslow Parish Church, the fun packed event raised over £200 for Food Friend.

Olivia King, 13, who helped to organise the afternoon said, "Our aim was to raise awareness of the Rio Olympics this summer while also helping the local community and we're delighted that so many people came!"

The hall was transformed into the magical world of Olde Englande and visitors enjoyed making shields in Nottingham castle, decorating gingerbread in Friar Tuck's woodland kitchen, making golden arrows in Robin's den and little Merry men in the peasant village.

The children also tried their hand at soft archery in the castle training ground and for the intrepid, there was a spooky dash through Nottingham's dungeon.

Entertainment was also in abundance with a Punch and Judy show where Robin Hood inspired Mr Punch to turn over a new leaf and a play where Maid Marion won the gold in wrestling and Robin defeated the evil Sheriff.

Every activity was associated with one of the Olympic and Paralympic values of respect, friendship and equality and once all the challenges were completed the children were given a certificate to show they were true Sherwood Olympians.

Nell Mountford who helped to organise the event said "Everyone worked extremely hard to make the afternoon such a success and a special thank you should go to the High School team who did a fantastic job with publicity and worked tirelessly on the day face painting and hair braiding. There was a wonderful feeling of community spirit as visitors and volunteers threw themselves into medieval life and it was a privilege to work with such generous people, both young and old in such a worthwhile cause. We hope we provided a thoroughly entertaining afternoon and we are delighted to be able to help struggling families in our local community."

It was a great event: raising awareness of the Olympics and money for a good cause too! Well done everyone!
