Vacancy as town councillor resigns after 11 months

A vacancy has arisen on Wilmslow Town Council because a councillor has resigned eleven months after being elected due to work commitments.

Fiona McNulty was elected to represent the Wilmslow East Ward in May 2015, taking the fourth seat at the elections from her mother and former town councillor Ruth McNulty by just 46 votes.

Speaking at the Town Council meeting on Monday, 18th April, Councillor Gary Barton said "We've had the resignation of Councillor Fiona McNulty who unfortunately due to her work commitments is not able to continue on as councillor.

"So we thank her for trying but we also thank her for the honesty. From someone who works full-time and does two council-ships, I had a full head of hair before I started being a councillor so I can understand why she wants to keep healthy locks so we thanks her and note the vacancy."

An election will take place to fill the vacancy on Wilmslow Town Council if ten voters in the Wilmslow East Ward submit a written request for an election to be held and two or more candidates are nominated.

If no such request is made the vacancy will be filled by the Town Council, who will be at liberty to select who they wish, provided the person qualifies to be a councillor.

Once Wilmslow Town Council has formally advertised the vacancy the public will then have fourteen working days to submit a written request for an election.

Updated 12.30pm, Thursday 28th April - Wilmslow Town Council have just informed me that "Following discussions with CEC, the notice of election will go up on 16 May and electors will then have 14 working days to request an election. The delay is caused by the desire to keep any potential election away from the date of the EU Referendum."
