Plans for new watersports and activity park submitted

A planning application has now been submitted to create a watersports and outdoor activity centre at the site of a former quarry in Chelford.

The site has an area of 53.5acres and encompasses part of the former Mere Farm sand quarry which is currently undergoing environmental restoration.

Cheshire Lakes Community Interest Company are proposing to utilise two existing lakes, which were created as part of the Quarry's restoration plan, following its closure. The north lake will house a wire/pulley system to enable wake boarding, as well as an aerial activity course. The south lake will be used for open water swimming, paddle boarding and canoeing.

The scheme includes a new entrance, parking for 100 vehicles and a single-storey multi-use building which will provide a reception, small kitchen; indoor seating; staff office, toilets and changing rooms as well as a kit room and plant room.

Tim Woodhead, Managing Director of Cheshire Lakes CIC, confirmed "If approved, this will form our third facility, alongside our existing operations in Liverpool City Centre and at Fox Lake, outside Edinburgh. Fox Lake has just been voted Scotland's Best Outdoor Adventure Experience, and I have no doubt that our proposed Cheshire site will be equally well received.

"The proposals will create 30 jobs, which we hope to fill from the local area. We have been looking for a site in Cheshire, where we are based, for some time. The location and configuration of the Chelford site are ideal for us, hence we have pushed forward at pace."

It is intended that the site will be fully operational in Spring 2017 and will be open all year-round from 6am to 10pm.

The plans can be viewed on the Cheshire East Council website by searching for planning reference 16/1353M. The last date for submitting comments is 28th April and a decision is expected by 20th June.
