A project to revitalise Handforth's Stanley Hall Park's skatepark can go ahead thanks to a grant.

The Veolia Environmental Trust have awarded the Friends of Stanley Hall Park a grant of £35,000 to revive the existing skatepark on Peover Road which has deteriorated over the years and now only has three ramps.

It will be replaced by a custom-built concrete one suitable for skateboarders, BMXers, inline skaters and scooter riders.

The Veolia Environmental Trust will start working with the friends group to finalise their project's details, including its start date, so that work can begin as soon as possible.

Secretary of the friends group, Janet Taylor, said "This grant is great news for the park and young people in Handforth. We feel there is a desperate gap in facilities for this age group in the area. This new skatepark will help meet this need."

The Executive Director of The Veolia Environmental Trust, Paul Taylor, says, "The new skatepark will make a real difference to young people from Handforth and the surrounding area. With the increasing reduction in the amount of funds that we can award, the friends group needs to be congratulated on securing this grant in an extremely competitive environment."

MP George Osborne said "I was delighted to hear that the Veolia Environmental Trust has awarded £35,000 to revitalise Stanley Hall Park's skatepark. It is great news for young people in the area and I would like to pay tribute to the Friends of Stanley Hall Park for their hard work improving our community."

The grant is one of 27 The Veolia Environmental Trust has awarded to community and environmental projects in England and Wales, totalling over £834,000. They award grants through the Landfill Communities Fund and since 2001 have awarded over £1.3m to 53 projects in Cheshire.
