Frustrated residents call for MP's support to curb dangerous speeding

Residents of Morley Green Road are calling on our MP to help them solve the problem of speeding traffic on their country road.

They have written to George Osborne asking him to lend his weight to their campaign to stop drivers from speeding on Morley Green Road which is a "rat-run" for everyone from commuters, taxis to the airport and heavy goods vehicles.

Carol Wallace, who lives on Morley Green Road, explained "The speeding traffic is appalling and I've rung the police a couple of times regarding dangerous driving/near misses and nearly been knocked off my bicycle whilst turning into my drive as cars have overtaken me on the right hand side as I was turning right.

"Every morning trying to get out of my drive is ridiculous and there's terrible tailgating from motorists in both directions as I drive along the road at 30. This is also experienced by my family who are drivers and other residents near me."

Carol added "We get abuse from drivers when we slow down and stop outside our house as we wait for them to come past so we can reverse into the drive - the rationale for this is being able to face the oncoming traffic as we drive out later. We consider this manoeuvre to be safer than trying to get onto the road by reversing into the speeding traffic.

"It's unacceptable and anti social behaviour and it's frustrating that despite concerted efforts from other residents it's still getting worse. If you monitor the speeding traffic that lights up the 30 signs very few will slow down - many continue their excess speed or indeed can be seen/heard to increase.

"Many cut the bends nearly Dooley lane on both sides and won't wait and give way to you if there are parked cars on their side of the road. We feel its very stressful and dangerous living in this area."

Desperate to solve the problem six local residents have also been trained for the Community Speed Watch Scheme, which is a locally driven initiative where active members of the community join together with the support of the Police to monitor speeds of vehicles using speed detection devices. Vehicles exceeding the speed limit are then referred to the Police, with the aim of educating drivers to reduce their speeds.

Sandra Farber said "This was all done about three years ago and all we got was two inadequate CIDs which have achieved nothing and here we are again doing it all again.

"Highways don't want to know about our on going problem. Also it's impossible to even walk down Morley Green as we've not got proper pavements so one has to cross the road 4 times to get from one end of the road to the other and at the busy times is dangerous to say the least."

Nearly 30 residents of Morley Green Road highlighted the problem of excessive speeding in the area when they attended a Wilmslow Focus Group Meeting in 2013.

Following this meeting Wilmslow Neighbourhood Police Team carried out speed enforcement on more than 20 occasions which resulted in over 30 tickets being issued and over 250 warning letters being sent out.

Wilmslow Local Area Partnership (LAP) created a sub-group to look at speeding issues around Wilmslow and particularly Morley Green Road, which included representatives from Cheshire East Council, Wilmslow Town Council and the Police.

SIDs were also purchased and installed in 2014, whilst they do not record any data the devices flash and warn drivers of the speed limit.

At least as bad as the speeding problem is the junction between Morley Green Road and Mobberley Road. Yet another accident at it two weeks ago. Frequent near misses, regular minor collisions - a car ended up in a garden a few years ago. I raised the problems in detail with highways some time ago (councillor CCed) guess what - no response despite chasing them.

The main problem is drivers turning right out of Morley Green Road without looking properly, often because they have stopped 10m or so before the junction to give themselves a good view to the left - and in doing so have no safe view to the right.

Out of interest: Morley Green Road used to be a 40mph road throughout - same as Mobberley Road. Can anyone remember when the limit was cut from 40->30mph? Was it at the same time as when they did the roadworks to straighten out the bend on Altrincham Road in about 2003-ish?
