Mike Bishop, Chair of Friends of Handforth Station said: "At the start of this year, which is our 20th anniversary, we are delighted to receive this Cheshire Best Kept Station award, especially as it's category is the first ever presented by Network Rail. Many many thanks to our numerous funders, partners and volunteers, who contributed to our success again, our 12th in this unique competition."

The Awards were presented on Tuesday 12th January before 120 guests at The Grange Theatre in Hartford by the Lord-Lieutenant of Cheshire, David Briggs, Professor Paul Salveson, a founder of the Community Rail movement and Alex Hynes, Managing Director of Northern Rail.

Other local winners included Poynton, who picked up the "Cheshire East Award" and Chelford won the "In Bloom Award".

Alex Hynes, Managing Director for Northern Rail who joined attendees on the night said: "Yet again our stations in the heartland of Cheshire stand out as a fantastic model of what a strong community rail partnership can achieve. The strength of the relationship between rail operators and the local communities they serve, results in some excellent station environments which continue to keep our customers at the very heart."

"Our volunteers in Cheshire recognise the importance of creating warm and welcoming stations for our customers and we're thrilled to see their dedicated hard work and passion for their local communities honoured."

Cllr Hilda Gaddum, Mayor of Cheshire East said: "I was thrilled to see so many stations along the length of Cheshire East win awards. Volunteers do so much in our community and it is pleasing to see the difference they make to our stations, and that their work is recognized."
