Rugby: Wilmslow High crowned Cheshire champions

The senior rugby team at Wilmslow High School triumphed in the Cheshire Cup final on Saturday 20th December.

The match took place at the AJ Bell stadium before Sale Sharks' match against Castres and pitted the Wilmslow side against arch rivals, King's Macclesfield.

It was a tight affair with both sides leading at different stages of the match. The scores were tied with 15 minutes to go and despite both sides creating scoring opportunities, some outstanding defence ensured the game finished 17 – 17. Wilmslow exerted tremendous pressure on the King's Macclesfield line during the last 5 minutes of the game, camping in their 22, knowing that having scored 3 tries to the opposition's 2, they would be crowned Cheshire champions.

Both coaches and players were ecstatic with the result, having lost out 29-28 in last year's final. It was a fantastic team performance, but Luke James was named official man of the match having scored 2 tries and played a big part in the third. The team now look forward to their match against Woodhouse Grove later this month in the last 16 of the Nat West Cup.
