Aviation enthusiasts clean up around airport

A group of plane spotters were so disgusted with the state of some National Trust land next to Manchester Airport that they took it upon themselves to clean up the mess.

On Thursday, 17th December, five volunteers removed cans, bottles and rubbish from Southside - the piece of land next to the Airport Hotel which overlooks the runway.

Lee Calver said "It's a favourite viewing spot for aviation enthusiasts. We go there regularly and this litter is detrimental to wildlife and can also be a hazard to aircraft if blown on to the runway. We would like to keep going to this location and not be forced off by some idiots littering so took our our steps to clean up."

National trust rangers came along afterwards to remove the 13 bags of rubbish that were collected.
