Having had a series of Guide meetings based around the topic of water, which included Balsam Bashing in the summer, the 1st Wilmslow Guides started looking at the lack of clean water for many people around the world and the impact this has on their lives.

As a result, they decided to raise money for a water charity and voted that it should be local charity Wilmslow Wells for Africa.

Lynn Bond, their Guide Leader, said "The Guides raised the donation by holding an evening for the charity and invited parents to pop into the meeting and enjoy 'water' refreshments. On that evening Jenny Gibbs, Chairman of WWFA, came and talked about how the charity started over thirty years ago because of the story of one maid, Emily, whose difficulties in collecting water at her home in Jericho, South Africa, is a story still being repeated for so many."

Jenny Gibbs said, "It was a pleasure to return the following week to receive a cheque for £86. It had been agreed that the sum would go towards a water harvesting project in Uganda. The water will be collected from the roof of the boys' dormitory at the House of Joy, which first opened in 2005 and is situated 50 km outside the Ugandan capital of Kampala. It is a 20 acre site comprising a school, farm and multipurpose building which over 400 children attend. Once completed the Guides will see photographs of the work done and also hear what a difference their money has made to those that will benefit from this water."
