A group of volunteers who came together in 2004 with the aim of protecting, maintaining and enhancing The Carrs park have received an award from the Royal Horticultural Society.

Following a visit from the RHS In Bloom judges in July, The Friends of the Carrs were invited to their 'It's Your Neighbourhood' awards ceremony held in Southport on Wednesday, 29th October.

The RHS 'It's Your Neighbourhood' competition runs alongside Britain in Bloom and awards community groups for cleaning up and greening up their local environment.

Chairman Ian Baillie, Secretary John Booth and committee member Colin Shepherd from FOTC attended the ceremony where five levels of award were given out. FOTC received a level 4 award which was categorised as 'thriving'.

A spokesperson for FOTC said "Nearly all the other recipients were urban community groups from Manchester, Wigan, Bolton etc so I think the Wilmslow attendees felt a bit rural!

"Needless to say we are all thrilled with the award and hope to go on to bigger and better things next year - level 5 is in our sights!"

The results for the North West In Bloom competition will be announced tomorrow (Thursday, 30th October) during an all day event at Southport Convention Centre.

Having picked up three awards last year - the Biodiversity Award for Lindow Common, the Most Improved Entry in the North West In Bloom competition and a GOLD Award for Best Large Town Entry - we are hopeful that Wilmslow can win a Gold award again for all the tremendous work volunteers put into this year's entry, for which they adopted the theme of Upcycling Wilmslow.
