Chance to see retiring Vulcan bomber ahead of final flight

As the final few flights approach, local residents will have another chance to see the last flying Vulcan bomber this weekend as it take to the skies over Cheshire and Greater Manchester.

The former RAF bomber, registered as XH558, will embark on her cross-country celebration tour on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th October.

On Saturday afternoon the 1960 Avro Vulcan XH558 will take-off on a large orbital tour of the north and is expected to fly over Wilmslow and Alderley Edge as she travels between Manchester Airport, Woodford and RAF Cosford.

The Cold War jet will take-off from Doncaster after lunch on Saturday flying up to Dalkeith in Scotland before heading down to our region and passing over Manchester Airport just after 3pm. The Vulcan's Northern Tour will visit 32 locations during the three and a half hour flight, which will be followed by a tour over the south of the country on Sunday.

The timings will all be confirmed on Friday, so I will update this article once they are announced. However, the XH558 display is subject to weather and technical conditions on the day and routes may alter, subject to local conditions at the time.

This weekend will not see XH558's final landing as they intend at least two more flights in late October before it retires from flying.

Excellent! When I was a kid we used to cycle over to Woodford and watch the white Vulcans being tested after they were built, prior to delivery to the RAF. We could hear the engines being run up at our house in Didsbury!

The Vulcan bomber is expected to depart from Doncaster at 1pm today so it should fly over the outskirts of Manchester Airport at approximately 3.15pm and Woodford at 3.20pm. After departing Woodford it should fly over Alderley Edge on route to RAF Cosford.
