WI members celebrate 100th birthday

Celebrations took place across the country to mark the 100th birthday of the Women's Institute on Wednesday, 16th September.

Some members appeared as guests on TV shows including Lorraine, Good Morning and Loose Women, others handed out cake in Parliament and received a letter of congratulations from David Cameron, whilst in Wilmslow celebrations kicked off with the official opening of the Centenary Garden on the corner of Arlington Way.

Members of Fulshaw WI were joined by representatives from Incredible Edible, Cheshire East Council and Wilmslow Town Council for the celebrations which included a special centenary cake made by Jennie Palin which was served after the official cutting of the ribbon.

An apple tree was also planted by Wendy Morris (President of Fulshaw WI), Jennie Palin (member of both Fulshaw WI and Incredible Edible) and Helen Yates (Incredible Edible) and a special commemorative plaque marked the day.

Wendy Morris said "Thanks goes to everyone who made this happen with special thanks to the local council for their support and guidance."

That wasn't the end of the celebrations though as five ladies from Fulshaw WI joined 45 other WI members from across the region to complete 100 minutes of indoor skydiving to mark 100 years of the Women's Institute.

Wendy commented "The evening skydiving event at Airkix MANC was the WI at its supportive best. Everyone took care of everyone and shared in the collective joy of each individual's achievement."

The five members from Fulshaw WI who took part in the celebration are pictured above: Wendy Morris, Diane Atkinson, Dorothy Bracegirdle, Jan Murray and Cathy Wallace.

Dorothy Bracegirdle said "It was a thrilling experience and brought members together from other WI groups."

Wendy added "Other activities will continue throughout the year based around "100 things to do in a Centenary Year" giving back to the community in a practical way with hand made bags, food, sanitary products and acts of kindness."

On Monday, 21st September, Fulshaw WI will continue the festivities at their monthly meeting, based at St Anne's Primary School, with another celebratory cake made by Dee Waugh.
