Friends of Handforth Station are organising a number of activities to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

The commemorations will start with the unveiling of "Silhouettes" next week - a collection of silhouettes of Winston Churchill which FoHS have prepared in partnership with Age Concern's SHED project.

The following week they will mount an exhibition at the station of 50 examples of the Churchill Travelling Fellowships over the last 50 years. The Trusts were founded to 'perpetuate and honour the memory of Sir Winston Churchill' and they award Fellowships enabling successful applicants to undertake foreign travel and carry out research.

This exhibition will then move to Handforth library and after that to local primary schools. Additionally when the schools return from the summer holidays flags designed by the children will be flown at the station.

Mike Bishop, Chair of the Friends of Handforth Station, said. "Following our critically acclaimed commemoration of the first world war last year, for which we have been short listed for two national awards, we believe these commemorations of Churchill will similarly appeal to all ages in the community.

"These events will also publicise the Travelling Fellowships. Many of the environmental enhancements introduced at the station are the result of a Travelling Fellowship I was awarded a number of years ago to visit European and Scandinavian Railways. I cannot too highly recommend the opportunity offered and urge all ages to investigate these before the closing date."

This year there are 150 Fellowships in various categories on offer and the Fellowship covers all travel, daily living costs and insurance for 4 to 8 weeks overseas travel, closing date for applications is 22nd September.
