So far 400 children have signed up to take part in the free Summer Reading Challenge at Wilmslow Library but there's still time for others to take up the challenge.

All 4 to 11 years olds who read six library books over the summer holidays will receive a free poster, scratch and sniff stickers and a DVD voucher. Plus a medal and certificate will be presented to each child at a special awards ceremony if they finish the challenge.

Sue Wilkinson, CEO, The Reading Agency, said: "At The Reading Agency we believe that everything changes when we read. For lots of families, the Summer Reading Challenge is the highlight of their summer: it makes reading fun and improves children's reading range, motivation and confidence. We hope more children than ever to sign up this year at their local library."

Libraries in 140 authorities across the UK also celebrated the beginning of the challenge by encouraging local families to take part in a world record attempt, for the most pledges received for a reading campaign. The nationwide total of almost 80,000 wasn't enough to achieve the record but lots of local families had plenty of fun attending the launch.

Guinness World Records Editor in Chief, Craig Glenday, said: "It was fantastic to see so many people of all ages come together to launch the Record Breakers Summer Reading Challenge; to see so many excited faces and so many new people going to the library as a result. Books have always been at the heart of everything we do, and we're thrilled to be able to support an initiative that gets kids into libraries and picking up books."

Wilmslow Library's awards ceremonies will take place on Monday 21st September at 4.30pm, 5.30pm and 6.20pm.

Librarian Marg Charlesworth said "We will have some distinguished guests and fantastic prizes at each ceremony up for grabs.

"You have until 5th September to complete the challenge and we're hoping this year we'll have a record breaking number of children receive their medal, so get to the library to join in the fun!"
