Wilmslow pub can open new beer garden

Planning permission has been granted for a number of changes to the Carters Arms which is undergoing a complete refurbishment, both internally and externally.

The scheme includes installing sliding doors to the front elevation of the pub on Chapel Lane and full height windows as well as the creation of a beer garden in the current car park. As a result there will be only four car spaces which will be reserved for staff.

Wilmslow Town Council raised no objections to the plans though objections and comments were received from three neighbouring properties.

Whilst one neighbour welcomed an aesthetic change to the current under maintained car park, concerns were raised about the noise impact of the new beer garden and the loss of parking.

However, the planning officer considered the impact on the neighbouring properties to be acceptable.

Case officer Matthew Keen said "The existing car park contains a smoking area and small external seating area which is currently rather unattractive. The planting and beer garden introduced as part of the proposal would improve the appearance of the area and when the existing situation is taken into account it is not considered that the proposal would have a significantly worse impact on the surrounding neighbours, subject to appropriate conditions."

The planning application was therefore approved but the conditions state that no external speakers can be installed and use of the beer garden should be limited from 10am to 11pm in the interests of the neighbours.

The plans can be viewed on the Cheshire East Council website by searching for planning reference 15/1944M .

In the past we have been obliged to complain about the noise from the Carters in what is a quiet residential area. According to the Carters' licence there should be no drinking in
exterior areas after 11pm (which would be fine!) but this is rarely observed in practice and certainly not on weekends when people can be outside talking and drinking up to 12.30 at night. Will Wilmslow Council be prepared to implement sanctions should this occur in the future? If so there will be no problem but I'm not optimistic. I hope they will do everything they can to put measures in place to reduce the nuisance for neighbours and instil some basic respect. We will certainly keep Matthew Keen informed about the impact on neighbours and I hope we're informed of the appropriate conditions.

As the then new purchaser of the house on the opposite corner of Hawthorne Street was once told when complaining about the noise; "did you not spot the pub when viewing your house". If you choose to live near a facility then put up with the inconvenience. The pub is an eyesore due to, guess what, greedy landlord (owner not tenant). The rent of this pub has been roughly three times that of the King's Arms and the Farmers!! No parking - no daytime trade.

Simon I don't agree with the argument that people living next to a pub have no right to complain when the pub breaks the terms of its licence on a regular basis. What's the point of a licence in that case? If the beer garden/outside area closed at 11pm as it's supposed to do we would be quite content. I believe in basic consideration for my neighbours and community and I wish other people did too.
