Cricket: Win takes Lindow top of the league

Lindow 1st XI won the toss at Barrow in their top of the table clash on Saturday, and opted to bat first on what was a good looking pitch considering the amount of rain that had come down on Friday.

Lindow got off to a steady but slow start against some very good fast bowling by Barrow's South African overseas player. The middle order of Brady Yates (36) and Jonny Barrett (39) were Lindow's core, contributing most to their finishing total of 136 all out.

Lindow come out to bowl pumped up knowing a win would put them top and well clear of third in the table and looking in a strong position in their push for promotion.

Opening bowlers Sam Walker and Scott Howarth bowled in a very good partnership with Howarth in particular bowling with pace, bounce and swing. He finished with 6-28 and at one point had the home side reeling at 48-8. But some grit and determination by the Barrow captain not to give up left Lindow still needing one wicket with just five overs remaining.

Eventually the chance came and Adam Bull made no mistake, snaffling a tremendous catch at Gully off the spin of Yates to finish Barrow off for 97 and send Lindow to the top of the league with only four games to play.

The Lindow 2nd XI maintained their own promotion challenge with a straightforward victory over visitors Ashley. Opting to bowl first on a damp wicket, Ashley were soon in trouble and didn't ever fully recover, with both Matthew Ramsden and Rowan Day being rewarded for bowling accurately with three wickets apiece.

The win never looked in doubt as Lindow lost only four wickets in chasing down their target of 116 to win, Andy Hume (20) and Rob Venables (19) seeing the home team safely home.
