High School highly commended for Tatton Flower Show garden

Green fingered students from Wilmslow High School have been awarded 'Highly Commended' for their garden at the RHS Tatton Flower Show.

Entitled 'Quarry Bank Mill', the garden takes its inspiration from the five parishes that fund the SK9 Young People's group who have worked with the school to produce the show garden.

The theme of the high school gardens is 'Industrial Heritage' so they have based the garden upon the heritage of the five parishes. Features include the water wheel and Quarry Bank Mill in Styal, the World War One Prisoner of War Camp at Handforth, the Button Industry and Lindow Man of Wilmslow, the copper industry of Alderley Edge, and the link between Chorley and Alderley Edge which is connected by the railway heritage.

The students have created clay poppies, a painted backdrop, a moving water wheel, a mine cart, train tracks, a large button wheel, which acts as a centrepiece, and a Lindow Man made out of clay.

Joe McBride said "It's been wonderful to work closely with Wilmslow High School and Cheshire East Youth Support Service to make the garden. Over a number of months, the garden has come to life and it's been brilliant to be a part of it."

Mike Marshall, from Cheshire East Youth Support Service, said "I think that the picture says it all. It shows just how hard the young people have worked to produce this garden."

The garden is very interesting as well as attractive and must have taken a lot of planning as well as a great deal of work to achieve such an excellent result. Congratulations on having your achievements recognised by the RHS. It also shows that WHS provides all sorts of opportunities for the students. Well done everyone.
