Town Council to request land transfer and 106 money for provision of public toilets

Wilmslow Town Council is to request a piece of land from Cheshire East Council and the S106 monies* they currently hold to enable them to provide public toilets in the Carrs.

The Committee hasn't finalised the design yet but in order to progress the project, which has been ongoing for some time, the Town Council wants agreement that the land can be transferred so they know they can build the toilets. Additionally they want the S106 money which Cheshire East Council is holding to help fund the project.

Councillor Martin Watkins said "If they don't transfer the 106 money then obviously the amount of money we're going to have to pay as a Council is going to increase. The most important bit is that Cheshire East, since the election, has decided that they will play ball with us and give us this piece of land. So this is what we are saying we want, so we can do all the other planning bits and 106 monies so we can come with a fully costed proposal to full council. Things have got to be done side by side."

The Council is not committing themselves to taking this piece of land at this stage but agreeing in principal the piece of land they wish to take, which is the area between the car park and the playground where the ice-cream van sits.

Last year Wilmslow Town Council set aside a budget of £65,000 for the provision of public toilets next to the children's playground in the Carrs and is hoping that the rest of the money for the construction will come from the 106 monies.

*Section 106 is money paid by developers to the council to mitigate the impact of a development on its surroundings. As part of the planning permission a legal agreement is made specifying how much money the developer must pay and what it will be spent on, such as improvements to highways and drainage, public transport, schools and parks.

At what point did CEC become the land-owners of The Carrs? This was a gift to the people of Wilmslow by the Boddington family.

@PeteTaylor: Wilmslow Urban District Council, as was, bought the Carrs in the 1930s (greatly extended from the original Boddington gift). Presumably in the 1974 local government reorganisation all of WUDC's assets transferred to the new Macclesfield Borough Council. Then in 2009 CEC would have inherited all of Macclesfield's assets.

What a ridiculous waste of money, considering toilets already exist which simply need renovating.

I have recently returned from Beaumaris where the town council took over the public toilets which had been about to be closed by the powers that be. There was a 20p fee to go in which enabled, I was told, the toilets to be upkept, and cleaned 3 times per day.
Knutsford's public toilets cost 50p as far as I remember.
There are self clean pods, one of which we used to have in Bank Square....scary but efficient.
Try taking over the existing building at Twinnies Bridge, and charging, And putting a pod or two into the playground area.
Any reason why not?
