Wilmslow in full bloom for judges visit

Final touches are being made to spruce up the town ahead of the North West In Bloom judges' visit to Wilmslow next week.

The Wilmslow In Bloom team will meet two new judges, Bernard Pendleton and Brendan Cook and show them around the town on Thursday, 23rd July.

Ruth McNulty, In Bloom Chair, and Helen Yates, of Incredible Edible Wilmslow and the Wilmslow In Bloom Secretary, will be the guides for the morning, as the judges work their way through Wilmslow, meeting the many businesses and volunteers along the way.

The Wilmslow In Bloom team have been promoting the theme of Upcycling Wilmslow this year and many wonderful creations can be found around town up cycling old items including gates, broken rakes, typewriters, old jeans and scaffolding boards.

This idea was chosen to complement the three year theme of Greener Streets, Better Lives, set out by the RHS In Bloom.

Helen Yates said "It's a really fun theme this year. There's a lot to make you double take or giggle in Wilmslow this Summer."

The tour will start at Lindow Common again with Ranger Paul Hughes, who won Wilmslow the Biodiversity Award last year for all the work the rangers do at the Common. The judges will be shown all of the conservation work undertaken throughout the year.

From there they will be brought into the town centre to view the 82 businesses taking part, as well as the Town Council tiered planters, barrier planters and hanging baskets. They will also be shown the Incredible Edible plots and meet many of the volunteers, look at the school planters, currently hosted outside Barclays Bank, meet representatives from Clean Team Wilmslow, as well as looking at the new sculptures that have been carved in Wilmslow this year.

Wilmslow Station will also be getting a visit as much work has been carried out here this year by the council, station staff, local nurseries and volunteers - including a wildflower meadow which is working well to attract wildlife that will help with pollination of crops across the town.

The tour will end at The Carrs Park where Ian Baillee, Friends of the Carrs Chairman, will introduce the judges to all of the environmental and community work, such as balsam bashing and Party in The Park.

Last year, Wilmslow won a Gold award as well as the trophies for Most Improved Town and Biodiversity Award for the work the Rangers do alongside volunteers at Lindow Common.

Helen added "There is a real feeling of teamwork across Wilmslow now and In Bloom has been a great way to pull all of the groups efforts together.

"We're all keeping our fingers crossed for another Gold award this year. Our long term goal is to be the town that is chosen to represent the North West in the national Bloom competitions."

Some of the volunteers from Wilmslow Cleanteam will be tidying up the town ahead of the judges visit on Wednesday, 22nd July. If you are able to help please meet at 10am at Bank Square or 6pm in Sainsbury car park.
