Church hosts marvellous medieval meal

Great fun was had by all who attended the medieval banquet held at St Bartholomew's Church on the evening of 10th July which raised £900 towards the restoration of the church organ.

Organised by church manager, Ms Flo Knowles, the interior of the church was transformed into an authentic medieval hall. Due to a major reordering in 2013 the church is now a flexible space which it would also have been in the Middle Ages with the church used as community forum, market place and worship space.

Much research and great attention to detail meant that as people walked in, the space felt ancient and as it might have done centuries ago. Guests enjoyed an aperitif of mead, sat on straw bales, and enjoyed food which would have been consumed during this period – roast pork, indigenous fruit, nuts, local cheeses and an array of local desserts like lemon posset and apple pies. Authentic touches included one salt cellar in front of the Baron with guests having to ask if they wanted some salt - this being a precious commodity of the time.

Entertainment was provided by Monty, the official court jester of Warwick Castle, who juggled, ate fire and entertained the children. Music was provided by a local band Maranella from Kelsall who coordinated three medieval dances and told stories - as would have happened at a feast of the period.

Costumes were optional but there were some stunning creations including jesters, pointed hats, monks and oriental guests formed part of the diverse gathering of both parishioners and friends.

As local 'Baron' Revd Paul Smith (Rector of Wilmslow!) reminded everyone, the banquet had a threefold purpose. It marked the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta, was a fundraising opportunity to raise money for the restoration of St Bartholomew's pipe organ but more than anything it was just an opportunity to come together as a church community, invite others and to have fun.
