Thousands gather for 103rd Wilmslow Show

The 103rd Wilmslow Show took place on Sunday, 5th July with just over 5,500 visitors gathering in the grounds of Wilmslow High School to enjoy a great day out for people of all ages.

The Horticultural Society's marquee hosted vegetable, art, flower, photographic and children's art and craft displays, whilst the Royles Classic Car Show concentrated more on the older pre -1980 classics this year and provided a display of 85 cars.

Throughout the afternoon there was entertainment in the arena, including the Chesterfield Muskateers Show Band, Joseph Peace Fire Stunt Spectacular and the Gary Lee Cumberland Giant Wrestlers, along with long time favourites such as the Dog and Geese and Cuerden Birds of Prey.

Whilst at the bandstand Stockport Ukulele Band, Lost in the Mist, Pantonic All Stars Steel Band and Annies Jazz Band entertained the crowds throughout the afternoon.

In addition to the ever popular fun dog show, the new dog arena hosted the Woodford Dog Training Club, Wilmslow Wild Dogs Flyball Team and Barkers Temptation Alley. The Dance Arena, another new addition, saw performances from the Alderley and District Caledonian Society, Ellie Anderson, Amy Mayers Sylk School of Dance and Knypersley Line Dance Group.

Other highlights included the cowboys gun fighting in their village, the Rotary scarecrow display, a 1970's BBC TV outside broadcast scanner and a selection of animals including horses, ponies, dogs and alpacas.

Many local organisations were also in attendance including Wilmslow Trust, The Romany Society, Transition Wilmslow, Wilmslow Dean Rotary Club and Wilmslow Community First Responder who were teaching CPR and the use of AEDs to families.

Councillor Hilda Gaddum, Mayor of Cheshire East, attended the Wilmslow Show to present the prizes to the winners of the competitions in the floral marquee.

The show is organised by a small committee of about 11 members who work extremely hard to put on this event.

Frank McCarthy has been a member of the committee for 19 years and Chairman of the Wilmslow Show for the past 9 years.

He said "It was a great success, with the new layout and format receiving full approval from the visitors. The whole feel of the show was that it had moved on, and provided an even more satisfying experience for people of all ages. It was probably the best show in a long time and was the result of the hard work of a few dedicated people who work throughout the year to provide the focal point that the show gives to our town.

"The sudden downpour and storm towards the end of the show was a great pity as it brought the show, which was in full flow to a rather sudden end. To rub salt in the wound, the weather then gave us a beautiful summer evening."

It was a really good show this year. Particularly liked the birds of prey display and the "Barkers for Dogs Arena", which included prizes for the best rescue dog. It was a shame about the production of "Little Mermaid" at the leisure centre because it meant that lots of children missed out on the Wilmslow Show. Perhaps there needs to be better coordination in future?
