Churned up verges to be paved over

DSCN0916

Work starts tomorrow on the footways in Parkway between Alderley Road and the car park entrance.

Small strips of grass verge will be removed so the area will form part of the footway.

Councillor Rod Menlove explained "This area has become increasingly unsightly due to delivery vehicles parking off road and churning the grass to mud. Local residents have complained and regrettably the only practical resolution is to replace the grass area with hard standing.

"Grass areas are an attractive feature and will be retained in the other parts of Parkway. I'm pleased to say that trees will be planted later and tree pits are constructed as part of these works."

Local businesses and residents have been informed by letter and the work is planned to be completed this week.

Wouldn't posts do the job?

I'm not sure it's due to delivery vehicles. I think the problem may have started after Costa opened when people started short-term parking, with near side wheels up on the verge, while they go in to buy a takeaway coffee. It's a shame to lose more grass but this is a practical solution.

Great idea Helen but not sure if you are being slightly sarcastic due to the article on Wilmslow.co.uk on 25.6.15 regarding verge obstructions :-)
This is a shining example of what would happen should homeowners be forced to remove verge parking deterrents!

I'm with Helen. Re-plant the grass and protect it with posts or large stones. Paving it over just encourages lazy parking.

Sounds like you are condoning pavement parking to me, Cllr Menlove.

I'm with Helen, re-plant with grass and put posts in between which may prove tricky should the council want to cut the grass!!! Failing that put down some decorate stone with posts in between, lower maintenance.

Whilst not illegal to park on footpath, pavement etc. it is illegal to drive on them. Therefore one must have committed and illegal act in order to have said vehicle in such a position. However our hardworking traffic wardens are, apparently, not able to ticket such vehicles unless yellow line offences are infringed. The plod however, who can ticket don't.

Grass and posts please. Use the unused paving stones to replace the dozens that are broken on our dirty and uneven pavements.
Wythenshawe has better - good show Wyth. Cllrs.

#Simon. It illegal to park (obstruct),even partly, on the Highway (carriageway, footway & verges) unless specifically signed to the contrary.
Many motorists legally drive across pavement every day to access their private drive via Council installed dropped kerb crossover.
CEC failed to apply for footway parking in their application for de-criminalised enforcement (contravention 62 / 63) as the TRO's were non-compliant, so only Police can issue FPNs for 'obstruction' and CEOs cannot issue PCNs for footway parking (unfortunately).
CEO's can issue PCNs for contravening waiting restrictions (inc DYLs)

I agree, paving grassed area is not the solution as it may encourage more footway parking (obstruction) and width of pavement is no defence.
decorative stones/concrete posts are not the answer either as all detract from what WTC is trying to achieve with 'Wilmslow in Bloom' initiative.

My suggestion to CEC, grass the damaged stretch, and approve TRO for DYLs for same stretch (Ald Rd toCar Park entrance) which CEOs can enforce. Plant flowering Cherry Trees in same area. to compensate for those destroyed at St Annes Parade by commercial LLs et al
