Vulcan bomber takes to the skies for farewell tour

Thousands of people were delighted to see the last flying Vulcan bomber take to the skies over Cheshire and Greater Manchester today as part of its "Salute to the V-Force" farewell tour.

Richard Bullock, who kindly sent us the first photo above, was amongst the crowd at the perimeter of Woodford Aerodrome to see the former RAF bomber, registered as XH558, fly overhead.

Additionally, lots of local residents were fortunate enough to see the spectacular Vulcan from their own back garden, or from a distance as it flew over Manchester Airport.

Photographer Martin Pawlett kindly provided us with the other five photographs taken from the Edge - scroll through the photos above.

Martin wasn't planning to take photos of the Vulcan, he just happened to be at the Edge with a bride and groom for a post wedding photoshoot and hung around afterwards as he need the bomber was due to fly over.

Lucky to be in the right place at the right time. In one of the Wilmslow wells open gardens on Hough Lane. Amazing sight.

A reminder of the Cold War, now sadly raising its ugly head again.
And I wouldn't be too sure that our operational deterrents on land, sea and in the air, are going to be effective.
