Upcycling gathers momentum as Wilmslow goes for gold again

The date has been set for the North West In Bloom judges' visit to Wilmslow. On Thursday 23rd July the Wilmslow In Bloom team will meet two new judges, Bernard Pendleton and Brendan Cook and show them around the town.

Wilmslow will be judged against other like sized towns in the North West and will be graded on three categories; Environmental Responsibility, Community Participation and Horticultural Achievement.

Last year, Wilmslow won a Gold award as well as the trophies for Most Improved Town and Biodiversity Award for the work the Rangers do alongside volunteers at Lindow Common.

Wilmslow In Bloom secretary, Helen Yates told us "We are hoping to maintain this level of award in 2015 and our aim is to become a contender for the town to be selected to represent the North West in the National In Bloom competition."

The slogan set by the RHS for this year is 'Greener Streets, Better Lives' and Wilmslow has added a theme of 'Upcycling Wilmslow' for businesses to follow. Examples of reclaimed items, such as toilets, golf bags and typewriters, planted up and beautified, will start appearing throughout town.

There is a large number of groups contributing to the Wilmslow In Bloom committee including Incredible Edible, Wilmslow Town Council, Cheshire East Council, Wilmslow Artisan Market, Friends of the Carrs, Wilmslow Business Group, Rotary Club of Wilmslow Dean, Clean Team Wilmslow and Wilmslow Wells.

The judges route on the day will show them the work that has been going on throughout the year from all of these groups, starting at Lindow Common and working their way through the town centre to finish at the Memorial Gardens.

The judges will see examples of community, residential and business planting, both floral and edible, witness the arrival of two new sculptures, a bird raft on Black Lake and a litter and weed free environment, as business this year have been asked to #WeedYourCracks and make sure their premise fronts are presentable.

To help out you can join one of these groups or contact Helen on 07771 862 863 or via email to find out more about Wilmslow in Bloom.
