Grants awarded for three youth projects

P1040268

Wilmslow Town Council has approved three grants applications for youth related projects which were all supported by the SK9 Group which was set up in 2013 to review grant applications from youth groups and direct funding to youth projects.

It is is funded by Wilmslow Town Council, who ringed fenced £25,000 of their 2013/14 precept budget, and Handforth Parish Council who allocated £10,000.

Firstly, the Council agreed to provide Lindow Scout Group with a grant of £2500 which will go towards the refurbishment of the scout sheds which are used to store their equipment and close to collapsing. The group have also secured a grant of £2600 from Cheshire East Council towards this project.

The Explorers from Lindow will be involved in refurbishing the sheds as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award and the Scouts, Cubs and Beavers will also benefit from the refurbishment of the sheds.

Mike Shaw explained "We are trying to do in an environmentally friendly way, rather than demolish and rebuild the concept is to make good what is there and secure the sheds to make them more useful to the scouting group."

Councillor Gary Barton commented "I very supportive of this. I'm a former cub scout leader myself and I think this is an exceptionally worthy application and the kind of legacy application that this Council should be looking to support. Particularly as ti benefits youth groups within the community and benefits all the wards of Wilmslow."

The grant was approved unanimously.

A grant of £1500 was also approved to enable a Wilmslow Junior Parkrun to be set up, the other £1500 required to set up the weekly 2k run has been provided by Waters Wilmslow Half Marathon.

The Parkrun is organised by volunteers although a start up fund is required to covered the cost of equipment, laptop, stopwatch timers, barcode scanners, cones, signage, finish tokens, training and IT support. Parkrun will then deliver free, community focussed, weekly timed 2k runs in The Carrs every Sunday morning for 4 to 14 year olds.

Parkrun is a not-for-profit operation which has been going for nearly nine years with over 300 active locations. The original 5k run, for all age groups, was launched in Wilmslow in April and has proved very popular with 150 people taking part each week. Sixty parents have already signed up as volunteers for the 2k run which the organisers are hoping to launch in August.

The grant was approved unanimously and Councillor Viveene Brooks commented "I think anything that encourages youngsters to get away from their computers and tablets has to be commended."

The third grant approved by Wilmslow Town Council on Monday, 15th June, was for £515 for the Handforth Youth Centre Fishing Competition. This annual competition is run by Handforth Youth Centre in conjunction with Cheshire Police and held at Goose Green fishing pond in Macclesfield. All councillors, except Councillor Bradley Russell.

Handforth parish council have allocated £10,000. What youth projects in the Handforth area will be helped. It seems to me we are subsidising Wilmslow projects.I thought Handforth parish council money was to be used for Handforth area only
