Complaints as restaurant erects "eyesore"

We have received numerous complaints from local residents regarding the construction which was erected outside an Indian restaurant in the town centre last week.

Work began on Wednesday, 20th May, to build what appears to be an outdoor seating area for Swadesh Indian restaurant on Green Lane.

Readers contacted us to complain about the 'eyesore' and 'fire hazard' which does not seem to have been the subject of a planning application.

Wilmslow resident Erik Garner said "It looks like a shanty town not to mention a major fire hazard. How did they get permission to do that?

"It's the most bizarre construction I've ever seen in Wilmslow and there's been some eyesores believe me!"

He added "To think that some people can't get planning permission to improve their homes and these guys throw up a load of pallets and plastic corrugated roof on a main shopping street! What are they thinking!"

Another reader wrote "Have you noticed the abomination that they have built outside Swadesh Indian? It's made out of old pallets! Surely they can't have planning permission?"

Cllr Rod Menlove went to have a look at the construction and confirmed to wilmslow.co.uk "This is a total eyesore and despite appearing to be a temporary structure possibly enclosing work of a permanent nature, it has no business being there in the first place.

"I did visit on Saturday morning but there were no staff in Swadesh to talk to. I have contacted Planning pressing for immediate action and am now told that Enforcement are looking in to it and will get back to me."

A Cheshire East Council spokesperson said: "We received a complaint about the outdoor seating area late last Thursday.

"Our planning enforcement officers are now investigating whether or not planning permission is required and if so, whether such planning permission exists."

I contacted Swadesh about their new seating area and was informed that I will be receiving a press release this week.

An update will be published on wilmslow.co.uk as we receive more information.

Surely the fire chief can order it down immediately under public safety? Some people simply think they can do what they want. To believe that it is ok by placing it there, begs belief!!

This has to be a joke or a publicity stunt?

To be fair, looks like they have gone to a lot of effort. I particularly like the windows.

Their website claims "beautiful surroundings" and "something quite unique". Well the latter is true!

I think that this is a fine example of recycling, someone with a good imagination and forward thinking ideas has obviously put serious thought into this construction.
I am looking forward to trying their refreshments when it opens.

Cheshire Council are useless and don't give a monkeys. I have just spoke to them about this. Refused to acknowledge a thing about it. Said she was only customer services. I have to email them and they will acknowledge the email within 3 days!!! After which an enforcement officer will be assigned to look into it!

You and I are obviously thinking along the same lines Ann. If the Swadesh pulls this off it will be a wonderful display.

The Planning department had not been made aware by the owners of any intention to make this addition on the frontage. The site was visited yesterday by a Planning Enforcement officer and the owners are required to respond. I am in direct contact with the officer concerned and will forward updates as and when received.

A structure def deserving of WTC & CEC Planning Comm. opinion.
If rel planning permission has not been sought, CEC should require demolition until such application is made, not just grant 'retrospective permission'. This would send a message to all taxpayers wanting extensions to their property, (though most are compliant with planning Regs).

Super. Now we can visit the third world without going to the airport.

Looks like a brilliant advertisement for Palletworld may be they are being sponsored by that lady with the big shoulders off Dragons Den. Or do you think they are trying to bring it down to the level of the shop on the other side of the mall for being just a little bit untidy and all over the place. They make a good matching pair.

The council are obviously not in any rush. Apparently they were still continuing with building work there yesterday. Cheshire Fire Service are aware of it and looking into it with regards to fire risk. Not sure how long that takes either.

Passed by a couple of hours ago- it has been painted fifty shades of grey (rather badly).

I have been updated by the officer concerned that Cheshire East Council today hand delivered to the site written instructions to remove the construction as the design is contrary to planning policy. Retrospective permission is therefore not an option.
As a point of interest, there is a permission for decking (11/0010m) on this part of the site but a separate application needs to be made for an acceptable design.
In my opinion it is such a mess of a bodged construction of nil design that the sooner it goes the better.

Cllr Menlove: " as the design is contrary to planning policy."
Somewhat like Lyme Green then?
