A retail discount store is planning to open on Grove Street, in the premises previously occupied by M & Co.

The Works sells a large product range, including books, toys, gifts, stationery and arts and crafts at discounted prices.

The UK-based retailer first opened its doors in 1981 and now has over 300 stores.

In addition to selling many big brands at discounted prices,The Works also develop a range of our own branded products.

Am I right in thinking they were here before and moved out?

That's what I thought, Sally!

Yes, they were here for a while. Grove Street is looking more like George Street, Altrincham

At least its a SHOP and not a stupid wine bar, coffee bar Wilmslow USED to be a very pleasant place to shop until the business rates shot up and put most of the commerce in Wilmslow out of business and made it a ghost town now its just a shambles and a shadow of what it used to be.

Certainly makes a change for a closed down shop to reopen as a shop.

A Poundland and Home Bargains next? I wonder how the few shopkeepers who complained about the market would view them?

What is wrong with people that would prefer to have a discount shop rather than a new place to eat and drink. Is this really wilmslow????

I would welcome B & M Bargains and pound land i Wilmslow rather than yet another coffee shop. How much coffee can one drink

I agree Margaret! My girls will love shopping there, being able to buy something they can afford out of their hard earned pocket money :-) They are too young to drink coffee or go out for a meal with their friends and this is great news - an affordable shop for many! So nice to see a vacant unit being filled - 'The Works' isn't an offensive shop - not to me and my family anyway!

As a youngster, there was a shop that I liked (I think it in the unit currently occupied by the Halifax). Was it called the "The Flying Machine"?

No contribution to the debate, just reminiscing!

There is nothing wrong with a discount shop - Cheadle has several and it thrives and people have to recognise that Wilmslow has to cater for everyone. What is wrong is that the street where it is situated has become a no-man's land.

A good mix of shops - independents as well as everyday item shops - is surely key to Wilmslow's recovery? The vast majority of the town's inhabitants are NOT millionaires or celebrities and might quite like to buy their every day items in the town rather than having to go further afield... Lower shop rentals and business rates might help too...

David Jefferay - do you remember the Stone the crows [I think it was called that] used to sell different items, it was quite an interesting shop - I shopped there when I was little. Discount shop would go down well, and a poundland would be great!!! it will certainly bring more people into the town if their are bargains to be had. I see people queue at the Waitrose bargains.

Yes Kerry. Was it on the row of shops opposite Revolution?

Looking forward to this shop opening, some people work in Wilmslow but live in poorer areas i.e. Bramhall/Cheadle Hulme and can't always afford expensive items.

Emma, I stopped counting at 20 different places to eat and drink with three more on the way and The Carters to be refurbished. Not counting pubs not in the town centre, take-aways, sandwich shops etc. Most of them are all but empty Monday to Thursday.
HO HO Julia, can't wait to tell my pals in their lovely pads in Bramhall that they live in a "poorer area". Chortle chortle.
One pound shop will not a difference make. Head to Wythenshawe, loads of "pound shops", Asda, Argos, great indoor food market with real butchers and convenient FREE parking.

I would welcome a pound shop in wilmslow or B&M bargains. As in previous comments not everyone in wilmslow is a celebrity or millionaire ! I to go to The Civic for bargains, it's great but would love not to have to travel to these stores and be able to walk into wilmslow. Next we should definitely have Aldi maybe a Litte Aldi where Bang and Olsen has just vacated
