Grant for volunteers who help maintain town park

Wilmslow Town Council has approved a grant application from The Friends of the Carrs, a voluntary group that is committed to assisting with the maintenance and improvement of the park for the benefit of the local community.

Friends of the Carrs applied for £233.01 to fund insurance to cover annual activities such as litter picking, balsam bashing, river bank maintenance, tree planting and grass cutting.

Cllr Ruth McNulty said "I support this entirely. Not only do Friends of the Carrs pitch in with In Bloom but they also allow us to host the Party on the Carrs in June there as well. They are generally most cooperative so I would most certainly second this proposal."

Cllr Keith Purdom added "I think they are typical of a number of local organisations who volunteer to do really good things in Wilmslow and I would support this very enthusiastically."

The Town Council voted unanimously in favour of giving the grant of £233.01.

Great to hear there is council support for those who give their time so we may all enjoy the park. Such a small amount of money doing so much. I wonder how much the expense bill was for the council meeting that approved it?

Whilst any support for these excellent folks is to be welcomed, what a miserly sum of money for such a huge area, when compared with £1950 for this patch of scrub:

Another totally bewildering decision by WTC.

Pete, the Council only awards the amount applied for, which in this case happened to be a very small amount.

However, there was plenty of praise on the council for Friends of the Carrs and unanimous support for the application so I'm sure further applications by them would be welcomed (should they need more money).

Thanks David. So who instigated the £1950 expenditure on that triangle of scrub opposite the Ford garage? I looked at it yesterday and, apart from half a dozen new plants (not seeds) it still looks like a patch of waste-land.
I wonder what the Friends of the Carrs could have done with £1950 and how many more folks would have seen their splendid work, had a wildflower meadow been sown somewhere along the Bollin?

Pete,
Sorry, I don't know who initiated it (it was a recommendation from the Community and Order committee, which I don't sit on). However, I was there when it was resolved at the Council meeting on 16th February though http://bit.ly/1dANKkG and I didn't object so I must take some responsibility.

The expenditure I believe was for plugs and seeds (perennials) which should be more impressive in future years. If it eventually results in anything half as impressive as those Daffodils on the King's Arms roundabout, I'll be happy (I'm not a massive fan of flowers as a rule but I admire those every time I go past).

If I recall correctly the seeds were "wild flower" seeds which should appear later in the summer.

I hope that these volunteers put in for larger sums every year for different projects. Every penny they are given is money well spent. Have they thought of applying to Cheshire East for money too? I note that in 2014 Cheshire East gave the small town of Bunbury (population just over 1000) more than £8000 - most of which seems to be for the recreation area.
