A reunion is being organised for those who were members of a Wilmslow Scout Group nearly 60 years ago.

John Harries, is looking to bring together former scouts who were members of the 1st Wilmslow Scout Group between 1957 and 1961.

He explained "The Scout Hall at the time was a converted chapel building (and a separate ex-stables block) situated on Alma Lane - more or less behind what is now Wilmslow Fire Station

"Apart from a large Scout troop of about 40 boys there was an equally large Cub pack, a Senior Scout troop and a Venture/Ranger Scout group operating out of the same facility.

"Scouting was very much in demand with fierce local rivalry; there were 4-5 other Wilmslow troops, another in Alderley Edge and one in Handforth too.

John Harries, 70, organised a get together in June last year for six former Senior Scouts who travelled down the River Rhine on a 12 day trek from Bonn to Strasbourg in August/September 1960 (during the Rome Olympics) and is hoping to get a bigger group together this summer.

John said "I'm approaching 71 and am probably the youngest of the group. In 1957 at the time of the Jubilee Jamboree I had only just turned 13, a 7 months newbi to the troop; by the end of 1961 we had all left the Scouting movement and mostly gone our separate ways - work/university or moved away from the area.

"I can now probably get into contact with up to 15 to 18 ex members of the era (including two surviving Scout Leaders). For certain (including our Group Scout Leader) I know of 4 who sadly have passed away so there could be 20+ 'missing' members somewhere out there.

"The reunion is planned for 1st/2nd July at a great hotel venue in the Cotswolds - we've already unearthed lots of photos and other memorabilia to remenise about over a drink or two."

Any ex. 1st Wilmslow Scouts from this era can contact John by email.
