Two local mums are pushing their bodies to the limits as they prepare to take on one of the toughest endurance races.

Claire Holliday (39) from Styal and Wendy Taylor (47) from Wilmslow are currently in training for the Ironman 70.3 triathlon, which they decided to do as Claire wanted a challenge to celebrate her forthcoming 40th in July.

They will be swimming 1.9 km, then cycling 90 km and finishing the challenge off with a 13.1 mile run - all of which must be completed in less than eight and a half hours.

Claire and Wendy are competing as part of Gordon Ramsey's Team (GR 100) to raise money for Gordon Ramsey foundation which supports Cancer Research UK, Meningitis now, Great Ormond Street Hospital, Action against Hunger. They are also raising money for Smile Train, the largest charity providing corrective surgery for children with cleft lips and palates.

Claire explained "As part of the team we have a training plan, which consists of 10 to 11 sessions a week. About 15 hours of training a week is needed. It takes place in Staffordshire on June 14th and we have been training since Christmas for it. Training is very difficult to avoid injury. I had an accident on my bike crashing on Macclesfield Road three weeks ago, luckily no broken bones but it has definitely broken my nerve!, and Wendy has a achilles injury preventing her from running much at the moment."

The ladies are hoping to raise £5000 for the charities and as part of their fundraising efforts they are putting on a hoe down at the Victory Hall in Mobberley on May 9th. Tickets cost £25, which includes a cowboy supper. There will also be a raffle and auction.
