Old to become new for Wilmslow in Bloom

Having won an incredible three awards in the RHS North West in Bloom competition last year, the volunteers behind Wilmslow's entry are certainly not resting on their laurels.

In 2014, their third year of entry, Wilmslow picked up the Biodiversity Award for Lindow Common, the Most Improved Entry in the North West In Bloom competition and a GOLD Award for Best Large Town Entry and they are now looking ahead to the 2015 competition.

Determined to maintain and even improve on the high standard achieved last year, Wilmslow in Bloom are calling on more businesses, organisations and residents to get involved.

Speaking at a meeting of Wilmslow Business Group, Helen Yates said "Last year we won Gold! Mainly because of all the people that took part which showed that Wilmslow is pulling together and working as a team. 82 business were involved last year so let's make it more this year."

The Royal Horticultural Society has chosen 'Greener Streets: Better Lives' as the theme for the next three years and the Wilmslow In Bloom team have decided to have a focus for each of the three years, with this year's being 'Upcycling Wilmslow'.

The theme of the town's entry will be reusing discarded objects to create a product of higher quality and once again the Edible Wilmslow In Bloom name will be retained as it makes Wilmslow stand out from the crowd.

Helen Yates explained "It's all about presentation and care, so the foundation is a litter and weed free premise front, dressed with their choice of edible and/ or floral plants growing out of any container they can find."

She added 'In previous years we've had reclaimed scaffold boards, painted bed frames and even football halves. We're teaming up with the Rotary Scarecrow Festival again too, so there should be plenty of ways to upcycle your scarecrows and perhaps grow the plants within and around them. The more creative the better.''

If you would like to get involved in this year's In Bloom entry email Helen Yates or call her on 07771 862 863. If you do not have a premises in the town, or if you have the space but no green fingered employees or budget then Wilmslow In Bloom can match you up.

The three trophies which Wilmslow In Bloom won last year are currently on tour and being displayed in businesses around the town. This week they are available to view in Harper & Quinn hairdressing salon on Alderley Road.

This is a great idea. Lots of things can be upcycled to become plant holders.
