Volunteers spring clean Wilmslow

For the first time, Wilmslow Clean Team organised a series of litter picks for National Spring Clean Week, which ran from Monday 16th March until Sunday 23rd March.

Volunteers were joined by a number of local groups and students from Wilmslow High School who took the opportunity and worked hard to help make the town look a lot better.

At least two litter picks were held each day which focused on the area around Lindow Common, Altrincham Road, The Carrs, Summerfields and the town centre including Alderley Road, Sainsbury's car park, the Library, Parkway and the Spring Street car park off Water Lane.

A group of students from Wilmslow High School went out litter picking three times during the week, the Romany Society cleaned up the Romany Memorial Garden off South Drive and on the evening of Friday 21st March, 6th Wilmslow Scouts met at the Leisure Centre and collected 10 bags of rubbish from around the pond.

Mark Toombs, Assistant District Commissioner for Alderley District Scouts, said "I am very pleased that Scouts were out helping to keep Wilmslow Clean, it's great to see these 10 to 14 year olds having a pride in where they live, it's surprising when all it took was 13 Scouts ninety minutes to fill 10 bin bags of rubbish that has been dropped on the ground around the Leisure Centre."

In total over 80 bags of rubbish were collected along with TV parts, car parts, traffic cones, advertising posters, hub caps and dog poo bags.

Stuart Redgard, Operations & Membership Co-ordinator, said "Thanks to all our members who turned out at varies times during the week and also to others at Wilmslow High School, 6th Wilmslow Scouts, and the Romany Society for joining in too. This was the first time the Wilmslow Clean Team had organised the towns annual spring clean having taken over from Wilmslow Town Council who initiated the event back in 2013. We have learnt the hard way. Done some things will, and others not so well, but we live and learn and hope to improve in future years."

Stuart Redgard and Georgie Johnson spoke at the Wilmslow Business Group meeting on Monday, 23rd March, asking for support from local businesses to keep the area around their premises clean or provide financial support or volunteers to help the Clean Team.
