Grant to help maintain adult education centre

A charity which provides adult education has received a community grant from Wilmslow Town Council to assist with the upkeep of their premises.

Wilmslow Guild has been awarded £1500 to enable them to replace seven windows and a fire door in their building which is a pre-fabricated 1960s school.

The structure of the building is sound but the window frames and door frames are rotten and in need of replacement.

Mr Paul Riordan, Principal of Wilmslow Guild, said "We have been in that building since 1962 and in fairness to my predecessors I think they've looked after it incredibly well for a timber building but the windows are 50 years old, they are soft wood and they now need replacing."

Cheshire East Council recently awarded them £1500 towards replacing the windows in the small hall and recommended that they apply for funding from Wilmslow Town Council for the remaining project costs.

Cllr Gary Barton said "It is certainly a local institution that's much valued so I think we should certainly support it. This is a modest application for sensible maintenance work."

The Wilmslow Guild was founded in 1926 and it continues to fulfil its original aims which are: "To provide a centre in which men and women may find opportunities for the enrichment of life through education, fellowship and co-operative effect for the welfare of the community".

Fantastic to see that WTC are spending £1500 of our money on this really worthwhile project, however, it is such a shame that they have wasted £1950 on seeding an unseen scrap of land by the by-pass:http://bit.ly/1ItAF9m and £5k on a coffee machine out of the WTC area: http://bit.ly/1NUDDSA

Hopefully after the elections the new Council will better consider how to spend our money, for the benefit of the local residents who, after all, pay for this stuff.

Good news for Wilmslow re adult education. However.....
Cherrybean Ltd based in Gawsworth would have done a better deal for a coffee vending machine and supplies. They supply dozens of borough councils and hospitals. I wonder if WTC supported a local business?
