Vandals destroy fruit trees planted by volunteers

Some fruit trees planted by voluntary organisations in The Carrs were vandalised over the weekend.

Just over two years ago volunteers from The Friends of the Carrs, Incredible Edible and Transition Wilmslow worked together to transform an area behind the old tennis courts into a woodland.

Originally 12 fruit trees were planted along with saplings to create a Jubilee Wood. The trees had been doing really well, last summer they had lots of blossom and this year they were expected to bear fruit.

However, some time over the weekend several of the trees were snapped off close to the ground and the wood was used as fuel for a fire. The trees are irretrievably damaged.

Colin Shepherd, of Friends of the Carrs, said "Mindless vandalism has seen the destruction of half of the fruit trees planted on The Carrs by Incredible Edible as part of a programme to maintain and improve this important open space.

"It is very disappointing when efforts by the community are undermined by the thoughtless behaviour of a few vandals especially when there is such a negative impact on the local environment and the pleasure people can from the town's main open space.

"We shall of course be looking to find funds to replace the trees."

If you have any information about this incident please contact Wilmslow Police on 101.

I read this with great sadness. So many people are helping Wilmslow restore civic pride, all of whom deserve our sincere thanks.
Ignorance complemented by mindless vandalism is hard to deal with, without 24/7 surveillance. If culprit(s) are caught, we would, I'm sure, like to understand why.
Wilmslow deserves far more respect than this from all age groups. CEC Cllrs can help this along by returning monies taken over the years from Wilmslow to WTC.

Let us hope that if these vandals are caught and prosecuted, the Court will impose a commensurate Community Order requiring offenders to physically re-plant lost trees under supervision, and pay for the tree replacement as compensation, rather than a Police caution/fine or suspended sentence.

Stuart well said. The work done to improve the appearance of Wilmslow over the last four years has been fantastic s such small minded and selfish acts will not deter it.
