Handforth Station has won an award at the 12th Annual Awards Evening for Cheshire Best Kept Stations.

Over 200 guests attended the awards evening on Tuesday 13th January, including Mrs Susan Sellers, the High Sheriff of Cheshire, and Cllr Wesley Fitzgerald, the Mayor of Cheshire East. The awards were presented by retired Major Eddie Pickering, Secretary of the Cheshire Regiment Association, during a World War One commemoration themed evening.

John Hulme, organiser of Cheshire Best Kept Stations, said: "Handforth Station won the "Creative Partnership Award" for bringing together so many parties for their World War One Commemorations and for flying the flag for Cheshire with their new ensigns."

Mike Bishop, Chair of Friends of Handforth Station said: "We were delighted to receive the Creative Partnership Award which recognises the magnificent support we have received from many partners and especially the creative ways our local schools have worked with us this year.

"We were particularly pleased that Rotary, who created the sculpture garden with us and have continued to maintain it summer and winter for 15 years - an achievement in its own right, could join us to receive the award."

Other local winners included Chelford Station which picked up the "Cheshire East Award" for the work carried by village volunteers, the judges noted the World War One Remembrance Garden planted out with poppies and red geraniums in memory of the 18 locals lost in the Great War.

Macclesfield Station won the "Customer Care Award" whilst Poynton Station won the "WW1 Commemoration War", a special award given in 2014 for the Centenary of the start of the Great War.

The top award in the competition went to Frodsham Station which was named Cheshire's Best Kept Station.

Alex Hynes, Managing Director for Northern Rail, said "Cheshire's stations are a great example of what can be achieved by a strong working partnership between rail operators and the local communities they serve.

"These volunteers recognise the importance of creating warm and welcoming environments for our customers at their local station and we're thrilled to see their dedicated hard work and passion for their local communities honoured."

Handforth is a wonderful station it is a pity that post 18:30 it has one train per hour from and to Manchester, unlike Wilmslow with 3 and Cheadle Hulme with 2, this and the early cessation of 130 and 378 are a disgrace and the new Cheshire East public transport company should hang its head in shame............ but of course Handforth commits the ultimate sin by electing independent councillors and so the ruling party aren't interested. It is time for Handforth to ask for a referendum to move away from Cheshire East and into Greater Manchester with its far better transport executive.
