Town Council delighted with progress of maintenance work

Councillor Ruth McNulty reported back to her fellow town councillors at their recent meeting that "considerable progress" has been made in the town centre.

Having pointed out a number of items that needed attention from Cheshire East Council some more work has been carried out, including repairing of the broken railings under the railway bridge, by the Bollin Fee traffic lights and the King William roundabout.

Additionally a lot of pruning and trimming of foliage has been done and the rotten wood has been stripped off benches on Alderley Road, which will be replaced shortly.

Cllr McNulty commented "We are absolutely delighted with the progress.

"All the postboxes have now been painted and the plastic boxes, which were to the side of some, have now been removed and they all look brand spanking new.

"We're now working on the green BT boxes, many of which are covered in graffiti which is a much larger problem as there are loads of them around the town."

She added "We are also delighted to hear that the municipal planting provided by Cheshire East is much more imaginative than it has been in previous years."

Members of the Town Council had a walk around in December with a number of other groups, including Incredible Edible and Wilmslow Clean Team, to look at some priorities for maintenance around the town. Amongst those identified as a priority was the bed by refurbished BP garage which is considered an "eyesore".

Residents are urged to report any road related problems, such as potholes, broken street lights and overgrown hedges via Cheshire East Council's online portal which is monitored by the Highways Department.

Not Highways, but it would be good if something could be done to replace the missing lights in the underpass. The vast majority have been broken for several years and it means that it is unsafe to use it. Our Councillors might want to take this route and look at the impression it gives of Wilmslow.

This sums Wilmslow up...

Yeh it's nice to have things replaced but seriously? Moaning about dead bushes and stuff surely our taxes should go towards soemthing better?

What a waste.

And what about the semi-derelict buildings in the Leasure Centre carpark, partially surrounded by a safety fence? The gable end rots, gutters are broken, down pipes broken and the missing tiles accelerate rot of the roof beams.
Should we view with pride the notice board? Do we read its notices with interest and pride? Or will the ever present ivy overwhelm it and ultimately obscure it? I feel a real sense of shame. What have we done that means CEC has so little interest in us? Why don't they like us?
The Cllr lists necessary repairs as achievements? They are not. Mending a broken fence or removing dead tree branches is something any householder would naturally undertake. Wilmslow achievements are so often due to our residents efforts. Our local council should encourage more of course.
They can do that by getting hold of the money that CEC hold on to that came from Wilmslow as s106 payments. Fund change locally and make CEC get on with routine repairs promptly.
Now that really would be newsworthy Cllr.
