Volunteers cook up festive treat for the elderly

A group of volunteers laid on a Christmas lunch for nearly 50 elderly residents from Handforth last week.

On Wednesday, 10th December, twelve volunteers from Handforth Royal Voluntary Service (RVS) served a traditional Christmas Lunch of roast turkey, sage and onion stuffing, chantilly carrots, fresh sprouts, pigs in blankets, gravy and roast potatoes at Hanford Hall in Handforth.

For dessert guests enjoyed Christmas pudding and brandy sauce or trifle which was followed by tea or coffee with a warmed mince pie. During the meal Rosemary, one of the volunteers, played Christmas Carols on the piano.

Josephine Bowers, Project Leader at Handforth RVS said "The lunch was very successful and enjoyed by all."

The Handforth RVS branch serve a two course lunch every Wednesday, during school term time only, for elderly residents.

Josephine added "The RVS ( formerly the WRVS) luncheon has been taking place at Honford Hall since the Hall was built in 1976. The main purpose of the lunch is to encourage the senior citizens of Handforth to congregate socially. The meal normally consists of a freshly cooked main course and dessert followed by tea or coffee and there is a charge £3 but there is no charge for the Christmas lunch."

Handforth RVS needs to recruit more volunteers.

Josephine explained "I have problems in sourcing volunteers because people are under the impression that they need to be able to cook, whereas we need people who have common sense, ability to work as part of a team and good with a potato peeler!"
