Warning over possible Council Tax scam

A number of residents have received phone calls from a company suggesting they are in the wrong Council Tax band and offering to get them a refund.

Companies have approached residents in Wilmslow and Handforth this past week offering to look into whether they are entitled to a rebranding of their Council Tax and trying to arrange appointments to discuss further.

Police are advising residents to be aware of possible frauds taking place.

These type of companies will often charge a fee for a service that consumers can do themselves and often provide misleading information so consumers part with their money.

PC Wadsworth has advised "Whilst some of these firms may be genuine, we would advise residents to be cautious and undertake their own research before signing any agreements. Further advice can be found on the Valuation Office Agency website."

You can have your band checked free of charge by contacting your local Valuation Office.

I asked the valuation office to re band our home successfully a few years ago using the instructions on money saving expert website. Received nearly 1000 overpaid council tax and reduced bills moving forward. It's worth checking your band but you don't need a firm to take a cut.
