Green Room presents fabulous farce

charleysaunt

The Wilmslow Green Room's second production of the season is Brandon Thomas's fabulous farce, 'Charley's Aunt'.

When it first opened in December 1892, 'Charley's Aunt' broke records for a play of any kind by running for 1446 performances in London's West End. In 1893 it opened on Broadway, enjoying another long run. Since then it has been regularly revived and played all over the world in many different languages. In May 1990 a sparkling production directed by Jeremy Cleverley opened the Green Room's then new theatre in Chapel Lane.

One of the most popular comic farces of all time, it's the story of best friends, Charley Wyckham and Jack Chesney, who pressure fellow student Fancourt 'Babbs' Babberly to pose as Charley's Brazilian Aunt, Donna Lucia. Their purpose is to have a chaperone for their amorous visits with Amy and Kitty, niece and ward of crusty Stephen Spettigue. Complications begin when Fancourt, in drag, becomes the love object of old Spettigue and Sir Francis Chesney ...

This WGR production, directed by Victor Hassan, celebrates 25 years of the opening of the Green Room theatre and as such, part of the celebration, the 6th December performance, will be a special Gala Night. Being a popular play, it will also run an extra night, so the production run is from Friday December 5th through until Saturday December 13th.

The Green Room Box Office telephone number is 01625 540933.
