The Wilmslow branch of the Royal British Legion is making an urgently appeal for a volunteer to take on an important role at this year's remembrance parade.

The British Legion is seeking a new town's standard bearer to carry the flag during the Remembrance Parade next month, and at other important events.

Kate Hewison, Poppy Appeal Organiser for Wilmslow, explained "The standard bearer will carry the Wilmslow British Legion branch flag and lead the Remembrance Day Parade from the British Legion, through the town to St Bart's Church and the Memorial Gardens. The bearer is followed by dignitaries, cadets and members of the public."

She added "This is a very important role as we are honouring soldiers from Wilmslow who died in World War 1 and World War 11. This year we are commemorating the start of WW1."

Anyone interested in volunteering for this important role would receive training from the British Legion. This would take place on a Sunday in Weaverham and Jim McDermott, Vice-Chairman of Wilmslow British Legion, would usually accompanies the trainee.

Anyone interested in this position is asked to contact Jim McDermott, Vice-Chairman of Wilmslow British Legion, on 01625 251532.

The 2014 Wilmslow Poppy Appeal starts on Saturday 25th October and runs through to Saturday 8th November.

The Air Cadets from 391 Squadron will be walking around Wilmslow town centre on Saturday 1st November, with boxes of poppies and the public are invited to make a donation. The following weekend, Army Cadets from 23 Detachment will be in the town centre on Saturday 8th November selling poppies.

Kate Hewison said "We urgently require volunteers to come forward and help man the static poppy stalls for two hours at both Sainsbury's and Waitrose."

Anyone interested in volunteering for this year's Wilmslow Poppy Appeal can contact Kate Hewison by email.

Tonight, Wednesday 8th October, they are having a Poppy Appeal meeting at Wilmslow British Legion on Grove Avenue from 7.15pm to 8pm for past, present and future volunteers.
