Wilmslow Symphony Orchestra launches season

Doug Badger

Dreams, visions, nightmares – from tales of Arthurian Romance to a hellish witches' Sabbath, the first concert in our new season – which takes place on Saturday 18th October – certainly has range.

Arnold Bax's Tintagel is a lush, romantic evocation of Tintagel Castle on the wild Cornish coast. Listen to Bax's luxuriant orchestration and transport yourself to the ruins of Arthur's castle.

The symphony was never the same again after Berlioz' Symphonie Fantastique, which begins with almost morbid delicacy and takes in the famous March to the Scaffold before ending with the witches' Sabbath: bells toll, and the brass blasts out the traditional Dies irae over the frenzied wind and strings. Bob Chasey conducts.

Tchaikovsky's elegant Rococo Variations for cello and small orchestra make the greatest possible contrast. We are delighted to welcome back the popular Scottish soloist Doug Badger, who shone in Schumann's Cello Concerto last season.

As always, the concert will be in the Evans Theatre in Wilmslow Leisure Centre. Which means that there is lots of free parking, as well as good disabled access.

The concert takes place at 7.45 p.m. on Saturday 18 October 2014. Tickets cost £12, £10 for concessions, and can be bought at the door, through the ticket hotline on 01925 756144, through the Wilmslow Symphony Orchestra website, or at Bang & Olufsen in Wilmslow.
