South Manchester Triathlon attracts 500 athletes

The 3rd South Manchester Triathlon took place yesterday (Sunday 21st September) and was blessed with beautiful, late summer weather. The popular pool-based sprint distance triathlon attracts both novices and experienced triathletes, and it saw just under 500 triathletes cross the finish line.

Based at the Wilmslow Leisure Centre, the 400m swim took place in the indoor pool whilst the bike leg covered a distance of 24.2 km around Wilmslow and the scenic roads through Ashley and Mobberley. The race finished with a mostly flat 6.2 km run along quiet, leafy roads taking in views of the River Bollin. This was the same course as Wilmslow Triathlon held in May so a lot of triathletes were looking to see how they had developed over the season.

Hamish Shaw of Knutsford Tri Club secured the men's title as he glided through the swim and was also the strongest performer on the run leg, finishing in 01:10:02. Runner up David Ardern crossed the finish line 01:11:02, ahead of Chris Green (Ashurst Bike Club) in 01:11:30.

Lucy Scott of Knutsford Triathlon Club, runner up at the South Manchester Triathlon 2013, clocked the 2nd fastest swim time before taking the lead on the bike and shaving over 8 minutes off her 2013 time by crossing the finish line in 01:20:16. Rosie Wild claimed second place in 01:21:03, and a sprint finish between Manchester Triathlon Club mates Caroline Austen and Rachel Crossley saw Austen take third place in 01:21:17.
