Charity shop closes after 16 years

SCOPE

A charity shop has closed after 16 years of trading on Grove Street.

Scope, which exists to make this country a place where disabled people have the same opportunities as everyone else, closed their Wilmslow branch on Saturday, 20th September.

Brian Brady, Northern Divisional Manager, Scope Retail, said: "We recently made the decision to close our Wilmslow charity shop.

"Unfortunately a steady decline in sales combined with the cost of renting the property meant that it was no longer profitable.

"The shop opened in 1998 and we are grateful to the local community and the volunteers and staff who supported it over its 16 years of trading."

The nearest Scope branches can be found in Altrincham and Macclesfield.

This property will now be marketed at a large rent (plus large rates). I often wondered how a charity shop could afford the costs involved in this unit. I also remember the lovely old shop that was demolished to make way for the pretty building we now have. Perfect for a coffee shop, estate agents, optician, financial institution etc..........

How long will it be before Wilmslow is a total ghost town every week lately has seen a closure of some description.

I remember when Wilmslow was a really bustling town and a pleasure to shop at but now it's a shambles, high rates and poor parking are mostly to blame for this sad deterioration, when is the plug going to be pulled to stop this rot.

I think you will find the shop is already spoken for. A large retail group are interested.

Many detractors have bemoaned the explosion of Charity shops in Wilmslow over recent years, but here we have one established for16 years, presumably paying rent and rates, no retaiw closing, poss due to recent Lease reviews or change in Corporate strategy. Strada and many other retailers did not last as long.
I wait to see if Barry's large retail group materialises and what it offers. Will it survive 16 years in Wilmslow?
Any suggestions? Lidl, Aldi, Cash Convertors?
