Cricket: Wilmslow on the edge of promotion

Wilmslow CC 1ST XI are on the edge of being promoted from the Cheshire Alliance Cricket League Division 1 as they beat Wistaston Cricket Club by 42 runs on Saturday.

This now means that Wilmslow only need a win in their final home game next weekend against Glazebury CC - 1st XI to gain promotion.

Jags Narayaran struck 85 runs and Adam Dixon, 31, to help Wilmslow recover from 12-4 and post 175 all out.

Winstaston have been Wilmslow's bogey team in the past, but with their batsman not on song and some fine bowing from Captain Jayam Patel and Elliot Rowe, Wilmslow celebrated a vital victory.

Both of these sides finished on the same points in this division last season, with Wilmslow narrowly missing out on back to back promotions.

The visitors won the toss and when they lost four early wickets, Wilmslow must have thought that this wasn't going to be their year once again.

With the hosts gaining the up hand they knew they could take advantage of this situation and close the gap on Wilmlsow to keep their slim chances of promotion alive.

But then came Wilmslow saviours. Wilmslow could be indebted to Narayaran who smashed 85 when the Squirrel him most and he was backed up by a sensible innings from Dixon.

This reinvigorated Wilmslow and once again, like against Stretton CC three weeks ago, Patel and Rowe were deadly with the ball.

Rowe got the wickets tumbling then, and was vital in blowing away the hosts on Saturday as his spin bowling helped him on his way to 3-17.

The skipper then produced another fine bowling display picking up figures of 4-19 to skittle out Wistaston for 85 runs.

Wilmslow have been on a fine run this season which has seen them win 8 of their 14 games which have gone ahead this year (7 have been either draw, cancelled or abandoned).

And they will be hoping there is one final victory next weekend against eighth place Glazebury to secure promotion for the second time in three years.

See Wilmslow's final game at Wilmslow Leisure Centre this Saturday. Play begins at 1pm.
