Transition Wilmslow and Wilmslow Community Archaeology are in with a chance of winning £500 having been shortlisted for the final voting stage of the Skipton Building Society 'Grassroots Giving Campaign'.

They each have the chance to win one of the 161 grants of £500 which are available for projects that enhance local communities.

Established in 2010, Transition Wilmslow are a group of volunteers who have established a community garden and a community orchard to encourage local food growing. They also help people reduce their energy costs and carbon footprint with free energy surveys and advice on reducing energy losses from households and businesses. They encourage sustainable transport and run family bike rides.

Florence Collier of Transition Wilmslow said "If successful, we at Transition Wilmslow would use the funding to help local people understand more about the amazing landscape on their doorstep, in particular Lindow Moss, an area of exceptional archaeological and ecological significance. The funds would help to pay for a mobile exhibition of photographs with explanatory text that could tour schools, churches and community spaces. This would support a campaign to restore the moss, to protect the landscape, provide access for walkers, cyclists and those with disabilities, and provide an educational resource and a green lung for Wilmslow."

Transition Wilmslow recently held a workshop for interested groups, and had a very successful Dawn Walk on 2nd August which more than 40 local people took part in to celebrate the discovery of the body of Lindow Man.

Wilmslow Community Archaeology is a small group of volunteers studying the archaeology and history of Wilmslow and Handforth.

Over the last few years they have studied the parish church in Wilmslow and have now enough material to make a small book of our findings. However, whilst they have managed to acquire the software to typeset, write and edit the book, £500 would help with getting the book printed in colour and made available within Wilmslow.

A second project they would like to develop is a range of teaching material for the schools on local history and archaeology. Within the group they have teachers with the necessary skills to coordinate the project and address it to the current curriculum but they don't have the funds to purchase the necessary materials.

Voting opened on 1st September and runs until mid October.
